Round 14 - Reserves Match Report

Hinterland 25.12-162 def Moorooka 2.2-15

If it’s not the biggest win the club has ever had it must be close after the reserves recorded a 147 point victory over Moorooka. The last time we met the game wasn’t decided until a Musico snap for goal in the dying seconds, however this time around our guys put the contest to bed with a dominant 41 to 0 first quarter.

Moorooka certainly didn’t roll over and continued to battle all day but the strength of numbers and steadying hand of some returning senior players meant that we were never truly challenged on the scoreboard. With a rock-solid backline consisting of Fairy, Josh and Peter as our talls we repelled almost every forward entry and gave it back with interest. The experience of Fairy in particular was telling and I’m sure plenty of the boys back there appreciated his guidance. Peter is also turning into a bit of a cult figure in the 2’s with his silver fox appearance belying his athleticism. Must be hard to tackle as well as he seems to be mostly made of knees and elbows, whatever the case though he is certainly effective and a great midyear addition to the team. Josh was likewise solid and let nothing stop him from attacking the ball and man. Willo can vouch for that after he was knocked on his arse after failing to get out of the way of Josh rampaging through a contest. Fair bump, play on was the call.

Steve was the major beneficiary of the dominance up the ground with his 9 goals stretching his already large gap to second as leading goalkicker at the club. He wasn’t the only one to cash in though as Lachy chimed in with 4 in his return to the 2’s and Wass also hitting the scoreboard a couple of times. He seemed to relish the opportunity to get out of the backline and was solid all day. Likewise, his fellow former backman Willo kicked a couple. I didn’t see them but I’m sure he celebrated accordingly. On celebrations, returning veteran Gilla probably took the honours after a celebration directed at his mates after one of his 2 goals. He slotted a very nice goal from a 40m set shot and proceeded to show his mates how much he appreciated their ‘support’.

It was great to see Zac back on the field after a Jennings induced lay-off. He was solid in his first outing and will take a great deal of confidence after getting through the game. Psycho did his usual thing in the middle as well as kicking a couple of goals and adding a fend-off to his repertoire. Mick also got back on the scorers list with a relatively modest 35m set shot. After his 70m goal last year it was seen as a regulation goal but was still worth 6 points so good on him. Watto continued his quest for match fitness after an injury lay-off and looks to be getting back some form whilst Brendo had to have a chat to an opposition player regarding when you can and cannot hit someone in the back of the head. He seemed to take the advice on board, Brendo was on top of him at the time though which may have encouraged him to agree.

In all it was a complete performance from the 2’s and gets them back on the winners list for the first time in a few weeks. With only 3 games left of the season I hope the enthusiasm stays and the momentum continues so we can go into next year with some positivity.

Go Blues
